Hey!
Obviously the wedding is on Friday, February 18th, but we are also going to try and have some sort of party thing the day before hosted by us/family that we are encouraging people to be in town for. Gustavo and I were thinking a bus tour through Santo Domingo ending up at his house for a dinner party.
Airline: American Airlines. www.aa.com Enter discount code 5521BM for a 5% discount.
The website for the hotel is www.belivehotels.com.
However, we are directing people to a travel agency at www.coralhamaca.com. They seem to have the best prices, and my family has already reserved their rooms through them and we have called the hotel to verify that their reservation is indeed there. So, Gustavo and I are going to use them. We are telling people to use a woman named Tania so that she can put all our reservations together. When you call her reference the Robert Noble reservations. Her info is:
tania@vacstore.net
888-774-0040
I would recommend a Sea View room. All of the reviews that I have read said that the standard room is not that great and is in a separate building than the other rooms.
I think that is all for now, let me know if you want any other info. You can have email me directly at garciakleigh@gmail.com.

Book Your Hotel Rooms
Gustavo and I have decided not to reserve a room block at our host hotel. For the convenience of all involved, we truly believe that it will be easier this way. Again, the hotel is:
Be Live Hamaca - All Inclusive
Duarte St No 1
Boca Chica, 2973
Dominican Republic
866-539-0036
All of this information will be listed in the invitations, but if you would like to get a jump on the room reservations we have done the research for you and you have 2 options.
Option #1: Book through the hotel directly.
$176 - Double Garden View Room
$224 - Double Ocean View Room
$350 - Superior Executive Floor
Option #2 Book through Hotels.com or similar.
$212 - Double Garden View Room
$250 - Double Ocean View Room
$308 - Double Superior (not offered on hotel website)
$346 - Double Superior Executive Floor
Things to consider:
For both of these options, the rates are based on a 4 night stay with 2 adults. If you book through the hotel directly - the longer you stay the cheaper the price per night becomes. Whereas, if you book through hotels.com the price is constant. Infants under the age of 4 stay for free, but children ages 4-12 have to pay $40 dollars a night. Extra adults in each room will be charged a fee of $69 on the base price of the room.
As always, dont forget about the American Airlines discount that was mentioned in a previous blog posting.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Gustavo or I.
Besos!

Dominican Republic Newsletter #1
Every few weeks I am going to do a post that includes some questions that I find in books, or that I hear from people that include details about the wedding or about the locations in general. Read, or dont read...it's your perrogative :)
-Why did you chose this destination for your wedding?
I have always dreamed of a casual beach wedding, and well marrying a man that grew up in the Dominican Republic made the choice easy for me. Most of Gustavo's family on his mother's side is from the Santo Domingo area. Santo Domingo is the capital and is about 20 minutes west of Boca Chica, the wedding location. I have to admit that there was some reservation right before we finalized the location. I was struggling with the fact that having our wedding in the DR was going to mean that not everyone that was meaningful to me would be able to attend. I found solace in that fact that I was staying true to what I have always dreamed of and prayed that who was meant to be there would be there - at least I knew Gustavo would be there!
-What will the weather be like?
According to MSN weather, the average temperature for the month of February is a high of 85F and a low of 69F. The average precipitation for that month is also 0.03cm of rain per day. Do you know what that means? Neither do I. But it sounds pretty good...
-What's the time difference?
Well I don't know much about how all this time zone stuff works. But, Dominican Republic is in the GMT (UTC) -4 time zone. Apparently they do not use daylight savings time. So I dont know what that means for February, but right now it's 6PM in Arkansas, 7PM on the east coast, and 7PM in the DR. That's all I got :)
-What's the local language and currency?
Yes, this is copied and pasted.
The Dominican Republic is almost entirely Spanish speaking. Due to long-standing and ongoing immigration from Haiti, Haitian Creole is spoken by several hundred thousand Haitian immigrants and their descendants. There is a community of about 8,000 speakers of SamanĂ¡ English in the SamanĂ¡ Peninsula. They are the descendants of formerly enslaved African Americans who arrived in the 19th century.[77] Tourism, American pop culture, the influence of Dominican Americans, and the country's economic ties with the United States motivate other Dominicans to learn English. French is also spoken by a good portion of the population.
The Dominican peso, also called peso oro ("gold peso") is the currency of the Dominican Republic. Its symbol is "$", with "RD$" used when distinction from other pesos (or dollars) is required; its ISO 4217 code is "DOP". Each peso is divided into 100 centavos ("cents"), for which the ¢ symbol is used. It is the only currency which is legal tender for all monetary transactions, whether public or private, in the Dominican Republic. The current exchange rate is 1 USD = 36.85 DOP.
-How many days should we plan to stay?
That is up to you! Gustavo and I are going to be there for about 10 days. We are planning on having wedding activities formally and unformally Thursday- Saturday. Come for the wedding, stay for a vacation!
Also, FYI: Dominican Republic has a national celebration in the month of February for their Independence Day...Carnival.

American Airlines Discount
Woo Hoo get excited!!
www.aa.com
When Gustavo and I went to the Travel Agent the other day to work out a deal for the hotel room block we also asked her about airfare. She was not able to help us out, but she gave us a little tip to contact American Airlines. American Airlines actually has a section on their website where you can register your destination wedding. This was the result!!!
The Promotion Code you may give your guests is 5521BM.
Your guests will receive a 5% discount off the lowest applicable published air fare.
Discounts are valid FEBRUARY 8-28, 2011 for travel to SANTO DOMINGO, DR.
You may be thinking that 5% is not that much, but if you were going to use American anyways...at least it's something. I was pretty excited about it.

Hotel options...

So we are officially just over 5 months out, and I am officially stressed out!
As most of you know, Gustavo and I have previously announced that the Hamaca was going to be the room block hotel. I have received a few calls from guest who have read the reviews from that hotel. Those people are a little apprehensive to stay there, to say the least. I completely understand, as I am a little scared myself. I will tell everyone that I did visit the site when I picked out El Pelicano as the site for the Ceremony and Reception. I did see an Oceanview room at that time, as well as the rest of the hotel. The hotel was not a 5 star hotel, but absolutely something I felt comfortable staying in. That being said, I did not experience the food, the casino, or the customer service - most of what the complaints on the review sites are about.
Gustavo and I have taken the last week to do some research - we have read other reviews, contacted our wedding planner, contacted his aunt who is in the wedding business in the DR, and looked into other hotel options. We have decided to keep the room block at the Hamaca Resort and Hotel. We have contacted a Travel Agent and should have all the details finalized for room and discount scheduling by next week. Please look back for another post regarding that. There will also be information in your invitation.
The picture that I have posted here is a picture that I physically took myself of an oceanview room at the Hamaca Resort. Also, I believe that they are under new ownership now, and their new name is BE LIVE Hamaca.
Gustavo and I understand if you would not like to stay at the Hamaca. We would like to let everyone know that we will be staying there from February 12-February 20th! There is lots of planning to be done when we get into the DR, and we would like a little honeymoon of our own :) Also the Ceremony and Reception will be held in this hotel - VERY CONVENIENT!! However if you would like to try out a different option, please let us know. We can point you in a direction.
161 days!!!
Kristin and Gustavo.

Oasis Hamaca Rumors
Welcome Wedding Invitees!
Gustavo and I sent out the Save the Dates last week. We hope that if you are visiting us here you have received them. We are excited to see you in February.
If you have tried to book a room at the Oasis Hamaca it will come up BOOKED. As I understand it they have not released rooms for that date in February as of yet. Once we get closer to the date, they will release dates with accurate room rates. Aimee (my sister-in-law) has also called a few travel agents and they have all confirmed this as well. Each have given a different time frame with when the dates will be opened up - with the earliest being the end of July. This hotel has 700 rooms - I have been assured by the staff that they will not be booked.
That being said, we will be booking a room block with either the hotel itself or with a travel agent once the rates and dates become available. The information for the room block will be posted here, as well as with your invitation.
If you have any questions you can reach me at: garciakleigh@gmail.com
Thanks: Kristin and Gustavo :)

THE Dress
I DO know that as a bride you are supposed to keep your wedding dress a secret from your guest and DEFINITELY from your groom in order to create a breath-taking moment the minute that everyone sees you. But, to quote Miranda from Sex and the City..."the jig is up." Gustavo and I are already married, we are already living together and we...gasp, have already had sex. Avoid your eyes to those that still want to be surprised and are planning on making the trek to the DR. Spoiler alert - there will be a picture of my dress at the bottom of this post.
Last Tuesday I met my BF Stephanie in San Antonio to go dress shopping. We met at a brewery at night to knock a few back and try their pizza. I had to get the recon work in to while I was away from the Brew Crew! It seemed just like old times with Steph...after that we slept in the same bed at Lackland AFB. Also just like old times minus the AFB part. Well for me at least :) In the morning I had my first fitting appointment at 11am. We made it a little late after doing some shopping on base and buying Miche bags. The lady that was in charge of my fitting was very nice - tattoos on her wrists and all. She seemed like she was fairly new but had no trouble getting me into the dresses with ease. I brought Stephanie with me to help me into the dresses I didn't realize that Amy (my fitting attendant) would be all up in my business making Stephanie useless. I had read in Brides magazine a few weeks prior that a bride should wear the type of underwear that she was anticipating wearing on her wedding day. I went in a white strapless bra and a white thong (my mother and sister would have been happy with any underwear at all). To my surprise and I'm sure not to Amy's surprise she got quite the angle of my butt cheeks when she was squeezing me into the first dress which didn't quite fit because as she and I deemed it, I am "pear shaped." Meaning, lets get this gal a bigger dress for her big booty :). I eventually left there with the dress that I had seen in a magazine...and thankful that I didn't show anything more to my over attentive saleswoman.
I am currently sitting in the Miami airport waiting for my flight to the Dominican Republic. I will be there for 4 days finalizing some wedding details - hopefully ;) So look for a future post about hotel/airport accommodations.
On a side note, my roommate and I have come up with the brilliant idea to have Chelsea Handler be Gustavo and I's officiant and Chuy be our ring bearer. Commence shameless letter writing immediately.

Buc Days Rodeo. What...a monstrosity.
I like meat. I like animals. I... am a hypocrite. I was not quite aware of the last statement (or rather unwilling to admit it) until this weekend. This weekend was the Buc Days Rodeo and Carnival in Corpus Christi. There is nothing I like better than live events and fair food...needless to say I was all about this event. My roommate was amped to play some carnie games and we had a friend in town from Laughlin AFB - it seemed like a marriage made in heaven.
We started out at the Rodeo. I must admit there are some amusing things that happen at the Rodeo. Professional Bull Riding really appeals to the sports enthusiast in me, Barrel Racing is entertaining as the only womens event, and how cute is the mutton busting? Where I absolutely drew the line was when about a dozen 12 year-olds gathered in the ring to chase about 4 young calves. The boys and girls were vigorously chasing the poor calves and throwing themselves in the horse and cow poop to do so. The people running the rodeo were glorifying their efforts by putting them up on the big screen as the kids were in a sexual position with the calves. The object of the game was to wrestle the calf to the ground and put a harness around the mouth and then bring the calf back the middle of the ring. EXCEPT the overseers let the game run on longer than it should for the entertainment of the crowd...which was in complete laughter. Once the calf was in its harness, obviously it was stubborn to go anywhere, so the kids would literally DRAG them to the center. Oh but wait, not by their rope but by their TAIL. Throughout the whole process the calves where scrambling to avoid the whole thing and were making sounds to show that they were not happy with the situation. I...was appaled and almost on the brink of tears.
My point is, I obviously found this event blatantly wrong. Why only this one? I suppose to some exent I found the roping event wrong too - but at least that is a sport too. I'm not sure why I found this teenager game inhumane as compared to the others. Oh wait yes I do...This was for the amusement of the crowd so some kids could win a meal at Whataburger. On the reverse side, the calves are probably going to grow up to be a nice burger on my plate one day and the PBR's win some sort of monetary prize (I'm speculating). I am sad and conflicted. I am a hypocrite. I'll continue to eat my beef the way God intended - without knowing how it got there and free of morals.

Wedding Colors
Gustavo and I went to Lowe's yesterday; with our roommate Paul in tow. It was a pretty big Sunday! We spent some time in the paint department looking at swatches and finally settled on our wedding colors. I have always wanted the colors blue and green in some capacity to compliment a beach wedding. You know, the water and the sky...right? Well I have quickly realized it will be difficult to find tropical flowers to go along with those colors without getting too complicated. We compromised on brown(the sand), jade (a mixture of green and blue) and berry (the floral color). That is the preliminary choice. We'll see if it changes when I meet with the florist and the wedding planner in a few weeks during my trip to the Dominican Republic.

Wedding Planning - DR style
Aright people, dont freak out - but Gustavo and I got married on February 19th. Pretty amazing actually. When Gustavo and I moved to Texas and moved in together, we knew that we were going to get married. It wasnt until January that we decided to speed things up, get moving, and get married the following month at the courthouse. My parents were about to come to Texas to visit, so we planned the date for when they arrived. At some point Gustavo and I talked about when the actual wedding and reception would be. We didnt want 2 separate dates, so we settled on our 1 year anniversary.
Which, brings me to this blog. It is my intention to write on this blog about the planning process. I want my friends and family to come here for information about the wedding. It is my hope that as many friends and family from the states can come as possible. This blog should make it easier: where to fly into, where to stay, whats going on during that weekend, etc.
To start the planning process I overloaded myself with as much information as possible and also signed up for theknot.com. By the way, Gustavo and I have a wedding website on the knot. Please check us out there as well. It all got a little overwhelming, so I enlisted the help of my new sister in law, Aimee. She has been SUPER helpful.
First step, pick a location. After much debate, Gustavo and I finally decided on the Santo Domingo area in the Dominican Republic. We are working with a tight budget, and we wanted to maximize the amount of people who could make it to our wedding so we decided on there. Next month (May 17-21) Aimee and I will be going to the DR to solidify the ceremony location and reception location. Side note: I have not met any of Gustavo's family that lives in the DR, so the first time will be without him. I'm feeling a bit nervous :) Anyways the celebration will be on the beach and attached to an all-inclusive hotel for ease of all involved. One of the places that are in the running is the Hotel Hamaca Boca Chica and their restaurant El Pelicano. Understand that this is not final, but the type of place that we are looking at.
While we are there we are also going to start the process of cake, decorations and flowers. I'm very interested in keeping the decor simple and local to highlight our beautiful surroundings - as well as utilizing the beach/tropical theme to its full potential.
On a personal note, the wedding planning process is new to both Gustavo and I. I was never that girl that sat around planning her wedding - so both of us are basically in the dark about what we want, and more importantly HOW to do this. It has caused much frustration amongst the 2 of us...but hopefully in the end it will all have been worth it. I love you Gustavo.
We are obviously working with a tight budget, but I went to look at a few dresses today. Lets just say that Corpus Christi is NOT the hot bed for wedding fashion. It suits me though, my main concern is finding a dress that is cheap but doesnt look it. Goodbye couture dreams :)
Lemme know if you have any questions.
